We are living in unprecedented times. COVID-19 has changed the way we work, the way we live, the way we interact, and even our daily language (e.g. coronavirus, social distancing, etc). The question then becomes who do we choose to be in the face of the circumstances that we are now living? Do we think only of ourselves or do we think of the others? I would like to suggest it’s both. We must do the fundamentals - wash our hands appropriately, maintain social distancing, work remotely as appropriate, etc. But is this enough? My take is it’s not.
In this time of pandemic - remembering our common humanity will make a huge difference. So what is humanity anyway? The dictionary defines humanity as “the quality or state of being human”, so you could infer that common humanity could be about those qualities that we all have in common.
With this in mind, what are the basic needs that we have: we all need to eat, to have a roof over our heads, to feel safe, to have a human connection, etc.. What if we challenged ourselves every day to find just one thing that we could do to make someone else feel better about what they are living through right now? This is my challenge to all - my hope that is you opt to choose to join in. Who knows - maybe you too will be singing out of your window!
